Photo – Mr or Mrs Grim.. or perhaps both ? Origin of the Grim Reaper
By Rick Krab APS

Origin of the Grim Reaper

The ultimate symbolism of the Grim Reaper is death. In Greek mythology, Thanatos is the deity associated with death, who was the twin brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep. The portrayal of Thanatos isn’t scary and intimidating. He is depicted as a pleasant-looking young man with wings and a sword. This simply shows that the Greeks did not see death as something horrific, but accepted it as a part of life.

In Breton mythology, and Cornish and Norman French folklore, death was personified as Ankou. His depiction is quite similar to that of the image of the Grim Reaper today. He is believed to appear as a man or a skeleton who wears a black cloak and wields a scythe. Alternately, some legends also state him to be like a shadow that seems to be of an old man wearing a hat, or a wraith dark hooded figure. Legend has it that four black horses pulled his cart which helped him carry the souls of the deceased.

There has been an ongoing debate of the Grim Reaper being a male or a female. First off, being a symbol of death, it is unlikely for it to have a gender. While mostly, its traditional image is depicted as a male, there have been legends associated with death being a female. For instance, in Poland, death is a female word Smierc and is believed to be an old skeletal woman, whose appearance is quite similar to that of the traditional Grim Reaper. However, death wears a white robe, not black.

Arch Angel Azreal :

Azrael means “helper of God.” Other spellings include Azriel, Azrail, Azraille, Azra’eil, Ezra’il, Ezraeil, Izrail, Izrael, and Ozryel.

Main Characteristics:

Azrael is known as the angel of death. He helps dying people make the transition from Earth to the afterlife, and he comforts people who are grieving the death of a loved one. And isnt this a good thing? to have angelic help at a time of the emotional period of transition.

Although life and death are the inseparable and inevitable part of this world’s existence, it was not always that death was personified as a scythe-bearer who wears a hooded cloak and carries souls to the afterlife. If we browse through the medieval history and the events that took place in it, it can be concluded that a lot about the figure of death as a skeleton can be linked with the massive deaths that occurred between the late fourteenth to early fifteenth century?infamously known as The Black Death. The plague came in various forms in different cities, wiping out a significant percent of the population. Because of the plague being highly contagious, priests refused to perform last rites, resulting in unburied death bodies. Considering the frightening environment, where everyone feared being affected with this pandemic, it was only natural for people to view death as a skeletal figure, as the amount of corpses in the vicinity were overwhelming.

If you’re going to give death a human face, why not make it friendly? That was the approach taken by the Greeks, who named death Thanatos. Thanatos was the twin brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep, and both were portrayed as young, pleasant men. In some illustrations, Thanatos appears with wings and an extinguished flame. His job was to accompany the departed to Hades, the Greek underworld. There, Thanatos would deliver the souls to Charon, the ferryman on the River Styx. In this version, death isn’t ugly and frightening, but attractive and helpful.

Feminine versions of death also occur. In Norse mythology, the Valkyries were beautiful young women who served both as Odin’s messengers and as escorts to the souls of warriors killed in battle. In fact, Valkyries means “choosers of the slain.” During battle, they would ride upon winged horses and, surveying the field, select brave warriors to die. Then they would transport these souls to Valhalla, Odin’s hall. Once in the afterlife, the brave souls were enlisted to fight in the battle of Ragnarok, an apocalyptic conflict signaling the end of the world.

The Valkyries are reminiscent of angels, the spiritual intermediaries between God and humans. In some stories, angels carry messages to mortals or protect them from harm. In other stories, they interact with the deceased, tormenting those who have sinned. The Angel of Death — a spirit that extracts one’s soul from the body at the moment of death — appears in many religions and cultures. The archangels Michael and Gabriel have acted as angels of death in Judeo-Christian religion. Azrael is the Islamic Angel of Death, who sometimes appears as a horrifying spirit with eyes and tongues covering his entire body. Azrael maintains a massive ledger in which he records and erases the birth and death, respectively, of every soul in the world.

I personally have witnessed the appearance of Transition angels, as I like to call them, as their purpose is to help the departing cross over safely to be with other loved ones already there.

Working in a hospital, i see them on occasion.

I have also spent many hours out star gazing and seen both white (angelic) and black wraith like figures zapping through the sky heading to help a departing soul.. The dark/black is of their choosing if they dont wish anyone to see their movements (those who can) but they come with the same love and light purpose.

Death has many helpers:

Simple fact of the matter is that there are many highly evolved beings/energies that work along side the main core angelic energies that help with the transition process.. They can be seen ( if they wish to be seen by anyone other than the transitioning person) as very loving caring energies of both male and female, that often help to channel through the persons loved ones already passed through, to make the transitioning human more comfortable, accepting and release their fear of what is to come.

There are many living people too that work with the dying and grieving to help accept and come to terms with death and dying.. in a way they two are energized by Azreals energy to help from this side of the fence.

Often if we look into a persons face at the moments before transition we may see an overwhelming sense of peace and comfort.. this is what our Mr or Mrs Grim reaper brings to the table.. they work in our divine creators love.

The scary skeletal figures are only in ones mind formed from a human fear based conditioning through out the centuries. And perhaps as a scare tactic designed by the “churches” at the time to maintain power over people.

So be is Mr or Mrs G. Reaper, or their many many helpers who work in love and light.. just ..

Dont fear the reaper .. sounds like a Blue Oyster Cult song hey!

Photo – THE SPIRITUAL OUTCAST, SPIRITUAL WARRIORS :
If anyone has seen the cult movie “The Warriors” you’ll get a bit of an inkling of what this post is leaning toward.
I personally have lost count of the amount of times I have spoken to people that were so relieved to be able to speak to someone about their spiritual or paranormal experiences and not be labeled crazy.
In this world we have people of several types.
There are people who who believe in spiritual and paranormal things, people who understand a good chunk of it or at least some basics, people who are total skeptics and try to debunk everything, ones that think your a total nutter and may even not want or dissolve friendships had with you, people who hover toward you because of your like mindedness, and unfortunately people who think you are slightly insane and push for medical or psychological intervention for you.. And then you have the ones that put the blame game on you for trying to help someone thinking that your corrupting them with irrational thoughts, answers and a truth of matters that don’t gel with their beliefs or what should be done in their thoughts for the person with spiritual or paranormal issues.
Sadly many of us have come across stories where children have spoken to their families of seeing, hearing and interacting with spirit, or shown themselves to be spiritually “interesting” and “open” to be shuffled away to spiritually uneducated psychologists and so called medical specialists only to be put on quantities of chemical and thought controlling medications which in the long term do not do the body and mind any good at all. The child through no fault of their own, not having spiritually educated or open minded adults around them quickly reverts into themselves and has a constant worry programed into them by adults that there is something very wrong with them.. That’s a tough way to grow up!
We also see teens going through school being outcast because of their ‘strangeness” which may well stem from their empathic and spiritual abilities emerging, or the teen reverting into their shell making themselves hibernate away from the majority of other teens except for a very few they come across who are of like mind or are open enough to accept the teens ‘quirkiness”.
Even for adults, often they can be labeled as nutty and find it difficult to find people to talk about their paranormal experiences.
Often because of fearing being “Labeled” as a fruit cake, children, teens and adults will not speak of their experiences.. Until someone comes along that seems to have an open mind, or they have no choice to seek out someone to speak to because the experiences had have become a life changing or a serious worry of an issue.
The good thing is that eventually most teens and adults do get to a point where they hear or read something that makes them wish to explore the things they experience, or had experienced. Its in that exploring they will come across like minded, and even slightly more paranormal and spiritually educated people.
From this, new like minded friendships develop, and new understandings that they are not crazy after all. Its the uneducated skeptics and closed minded adults and the spiritually uneducated psychologists and medical persons that are the ones that need a little cattle prod up the rear end to open up to some larger life truths.
I remember a few years back standing at a train station wearing my Australian Paranormal Society top and being approached by a priest who asked me about what was written on my top… The conversation led to me being outcast as a demon corrupted individual bound for hell !
All i did was smile and tell the priest “thats fine, when you return to God, and learn the truth thats out there, your welcome to come back and visit me, I will happily accept your apology” .. and with that I smiled and remained on my Spiritual Warrior path.
Its fine to be a spiritual outcast, you will always come across people in life that will give you that label.
Eventually along your life journey you will band together with others of like minds, and form a merry band of spiritual warriors, or at least, come to strongly believe that there are bigger truths out there, and bring out the warrior within you enough to be able to freely become a spiritual seeker, without worrying about uneducated twats that try to label you as a fruit cake. ..
All hail the spiritual warrior within :)
………… Rick
